Why provide sliding scale chiropractic care?
Alternative healthcare, including chiropractic care, is often cost prohibitive to most. Because chiropractic care is poorly supported by insurance, it becomes a healing modality for those with greater intersections of privilege. Having grown up with financial insecurity and now becoming a healthcare provider, it’s been heartbreaking to realize that those who often need care the most are those who don’t have access to it, which rings especially true for minority women who are pregnant. I can now see how access to chiropractic care could’ve changed mine and my family’s life, and as I worked through chiropractic school, I was driven to find a way to give back and create a path of possibility for more women to receive chiropractic care. I want you to have a healthcare provider that will listen to you and help support you in healing and becoming more resourced.
Why support women of color?
Any woman can tell you how their experience in the world of health care has likely been riddled with some really unfortunate experiences. For WOC, this tends to be even more true than most and it's something that can understandably alter trust in healthcare providers and the overall healthcare system. At Root Function, I want you to be seen for who you are and given the space to be listened to. As a chiropractor. I was trained in basic primary care and our office maintains this skillset to be a compliment to women’s overall healthcare and to make sure issues don’t fall through the cracks.
Who can apply for sliding scale coverage underneath Shift Change?
Shift Change is for WOC solopreneurs. We recognize that intersections of trauma and privilege heavily affect an entrepreneur’s access to chiropractic care and that is why we are here to support you.
Is the chiropractic care the same as at Root Function?
YES! Shift Change operates as a non-profit underneath Root Function, meaning that you will receive the same care as a patient not utilizing a sliding scale for payment. Your financial situation will remain private between you and the Root Function staff.
Can you explain how the sliding scale works?
The sliding scale is based on a few factors including income and household family size. We are happy to look at your financial situation together to determine your cost before we begin care. Reassessment of your financial status is done every 6-12 months. All those who meet the requirement for sliding scale care are encouraged to apply for coverage.

Our First Visit: We’ll go through your health history and make time for in-depth questions to make sure we understand your full health picture. Based on your history, we will do exams (physical, neurological, and chiropractic assessments). If it is both safe and appropriate given your history, an adjustment will be given.
Our Second Visit: We’ll leave room for more questions and connect some of the dots in your history and our exam findings to help you better understand where your body is at. After that we'll deliver your adjustment. At the end of the appointment, we’ll discuss what care moving forward can or ideally will look like for them based on what your unique goals are.
Third Visit + Beyond: Regular care will ensue, and as you change and develop or have a shift in need, we’ll periodically re-examine/ re-test you in order to adjust your care. We may also discuss other resources for continued support on your healthcare journey.
